Both materials repair cavities. But they behave very differently inside your mouth over the next decade.

How each material works

Composite resin bonds chemically to enamel, so we remove less healthy tooth. Amalgam is packed into a shaped hole and held in mechanically.

Looks and longevity

Composite matches your tooth shade and is invisible. Amalgam is very durable but can expand and contribute to cracks over many years.

Should you replace old silver fillings?

Only when they are cracked, leaking or have decay underneath. Replacing healthy fillings just for appearance is a personal choice we are happy to discuss.
