The short answer
A deep cleaning, or scaling and root planing, removes tartar and bacteria from below the gumline and smooths root surfaces so gums can reattach. It is recommended when gum pockets measure 4 mm or deeper. At Pacific Dental Group, the area is numbed first, and new patients can start with our $199 deep cleaning special.

Who deep cleaning (scaling & root planing) is right for

- Gums that look puffy, red or are pulling away from teeth
- Patients told at a prior office they need “quadrants”
What to expect, step by step
Measure
We gently measure each gum pocket and take X-rays to check bone levels.
Numb
Each area is numbed so you feel pressure, not pain.
Scale
Ultrasonic and hand instruments remove tartar from root surfaces.
Plane
Roots are smoothed so bacteria have fewer places to hide and gums can heal.
Re-check
In 4–6 weeks we re-measure to confirm the gums are tightening up.
Is a deep cleaning really necessary?
A regular cleaning only reaches tartar above the gums. When pockets deepen past 4 mm, bacteria colonize the root surfaces where a toothbrush, floss and a routine cleaning cannot reach. That is when we recommend scaling and root planing.
We show you the pocket measurements and X-rays so the recommendation is never a mystery. Many patients tell us it is the first time someone actually explained why.
Does a deep cleaning hurt?
With local anesthetic, most patients describe the experience as pressure and vibration rather than pain. Gums may feel tender for a day or two, and warm salt-water rinses help.
If you are anxious, ask about our sedation options. One of our reviewers called themselves “so chicken” before their deep cleaning — and now won’t go anywhere else.

Deep Cleaning (Scaling & Root Planing) FAQs
How do I know if I need a deep cleaning?
If your gum pockets measure 4 mm or deeper, bleed when measured, or X-rays show bone loss, a deep cleaning is usually recommended.
How long does a deep cleaning take?
Typically one to two visits of about 60–90 minutes each, depending on how many areas need treatment.
Can I eat after a deep cleaning?
Yes, once the numbness wears off. Stick to soft foods for the rest of the day and avoid very hot or spicy items.
Will my gums grow back?
Gums often tighten and pockets shrink after treatment. Lost bone does not regrow on its own, which is why treating early matters.
What happens after a deep cleaning?
Most patients move to periodontal maintenance cleanings every three to four months to keep gum disease from returning.
